Each summer The Houston Electrical League Scholarship Foundation (HELSF) places 15-20 students with Houston area companies as part of our Summer Intern Program. Undergraduate students from The Industrial Distribution Program at Texas A&M and The Supply Chain and Logistics Technology Program at The University of Houston are selected by submitting a written application and submitting to a personal interview conducted by The HELSF Scholarship Committee. In January, the HELSF solicits participation from sponsor companies to host an intern for the summer. In February, The HELSF Scholarship Committee reviews student applications and conducts personal interviews on campus.

Sponsor Companies

If your company is interested in sponsoring an intern for the summer, it is an easy process. Simplycontact either one the scholarship co-chairman Kellie [email protected] or Jake [email protected] indicating you want to participate - The HELSF handles all the rest!

The HELSF will review the applications, conduct the interviews, and make a selection that we think is the best fit for your company based on the student’s area of interest and their location. The HELSF will advise you of key dates associated with the program including our kick-off luncheon in April, the official start date in early May, Social and Educational events in June and July, and the official end date and intern presentation meeting in early August.

The sponsor company must provide a 40-hour work week, for (12) weeks, at a pay of $18 to $23 per hour, paid directly to the intern per your standard payroll procedures. As well as provide the student intern with a valuable “real world” summer experience as a member of your organization.

Undergraduate Student Applicants

Student interns are selected based on submitting an application, meeting all eligibility requirements, and by a personal interview process conducted on-campus by The HEL Scholarship Committee. The HELSF will attempt to place you with a company that matches your area of interest and is close to your summer residence.

If selected, you will work directly for your company sponsor, not The HELSF. Upon completing your 12-week assignment, The HELSF will contribute a scholarship (tax-free) directly into your financial aid account. Amounts vary yearly depending on available funding, but range between $2,000-3,500 per intern. The wages earned by your summer employer, in conjunction with the scholarship awarded at the end of the summer, will result in the opportunity to earn over $7,700 to help with your education expenses – in addition to the educational experience you will receive during your internship
