10am – Best Practices for Upgrading Aging and Obsolete Automation Systems

Abstract

Industrial automation solutions are critical assets to manufacturing companies. These companies depend on these systems to ensure continuous operations. While these systems are extremely reliable and may operate for 20 years or more, over this time frame, most begin to show their age and are challenged to meet the requirements of current technologies. This results in a system that fails to be efficient and to provide security from external digital threats. Furthermore, as they reach the end of life, they become critical failure points and can lead to lost production time.

Expanse Electrical’s presentation will review how to mitigate these and other risks associated with multiple issues of obsolescence or older technology. Including:
• Lack of spare parts
• Reduced availability of resources with knowledge of legacy systems
• Increase risk of digital attacks on infrastructure
• Isolation of legacy systems prohibiting access to critical production data

Expanse will provide some real-world examples of best practices that assist in industrial automation upgrades and modernizations of these obsolete and aging automation systems.
